Before answering that question, let’s discuss exactly what unofficial scores TOEFL are.
So, there are two types of TOEFL tests. A paper version is available in some countries at a test center. Then, there is the computer version which is taken online. Unofficial scores are NOT available for the paper version of the test, but they are for the computer version.
Just after you take the online TOEFL, your reading and listening scores are automatically graded and calculated. These scores are unofficial. If you want to keep these scores, you have to make sure you don’t cancel them, AND they need to be verified. That is, ETS needs to make sure there was no fraud, cheating, manipulation, or any other unethical behavior.
Mind you, there are no unofficial scores for the speaking and writing sections since these sections require a human evaluator. However, the reading and listening sections are graded automatically. Provided unethical behavior a.k.a cheating has not occurred, and there were no interruptions such as electrical outages and other mishaps, your unofficial reading and listening scores are accurate.
I hope you found this information helpful. I teach English Language Learners how to improve their academic English skills and get high scores on the TOEFL. For more information, please send me a message, and I will be happy to explain more.
